Design A Wallet #DailyUX

#DailyUX - Day1

I'm happy to start my Daily UX challenge. Thanks Florian for creating this!

Day 1 task:
"Interview a friend, try to get interesting findings from it and design the perfect Wallet for this friend!
User interviews, affinity diagrams, sketches, wireframes, mocks, etc. You have plenty of tools to complete this challenge."

User research

I talked with my roommate for a while, asked some questions, and got her answers as follows:

1. What do you carry in your wallet? What proportion of each category?

- little cash and almost no coins
- my driving license
- two debit cards
- some ID photos
- a portrait of herself as a gift from a friend

2.  How do you use your wallet?

I usually just take out my cards from my wallet.

3. What's the frequency of using your wallet?

I always put my wallet in the backpack and use it about twice a week, usually on weekends.

4. What does your wallet look like inside?

(I didn't take a photo of her wallet, but I found a picture of a similar wallet .)
5. Do you have any expectation for a new wallet?

- Size: keep the same size
- Appearance: I really don't care.
- Function: I want a separate card section attached to my wallet so that I can easily take out my cards.

6. If I can design a new wallet for you, what aspect would you value most? Aesthetic/Smart/Multi-functional/Portable/...?

- Portable

Design Process

Based on the user research, here is:

An affinity map
The first unsatisfying design
The final design
The idea of the final design is to help my roommate to easily find a card since she will have more cards in the future. The buttons on the front are like app icons on a screen of a cell phone. If my roommate presses a button, then a card connected to that button would "pop up" for her to grab. It is super helpful for her to manage her cards.

Also, she suggested not to include too much space for the money. So I designed the middle connection part where she can put coins if necessary. On the right part of the wallet, a folder is for containing little cash.

The new wallet is slimmer, smarter and more portable for my roommate to use. Yay!

Reflection

Dream big!
Never question your crazy ideas. Draw it and explain it to others as much as possible.
